A practical approach to reducing our impact

Producing, roasting, packaging and transporting coffee all have an environmental impact.

We believe our responsibility is to understand where we can make meaningful changes, act on them and communicate clearly about what we are doing.

Rather than presenting individual initiatives as a solution, we focus on practical decisions across the way we roast, pack and distribute coffee, while supporting research into the long-term future of coffee production.

1% For The Planet

Since 2021, we have committed 1% of our revenue to environmental organisations through 1% for the Planet.

The majority of this support currently goes to World Coffee Research, a non-profit organisation working to secure the future of coffee through agricultural research, plant breeding and the development of more resilient coffee varieties.

Supporting this work allows us to direct a fixed proportion of our growth towards challenges that affect the long-term future of our industry.

Our roastery

All electricity used at our Manchester roastery comes from 100% renewable sources.

We roast on a Loring S35, chosen in part for its energy-efficient design, deliver locally using our electric van, and donate all of our jute coffee sacks to be repurposed into felt.

Packaging and reuse

Our wholesale operation prioritises reuse over single-use packaging. The majority of our local wholesale coffee is delivered in reusable tubs, which are collected, cleaned and returned into circulation.

Our coffee bags are made from up to 83% post-consumer recycled material and are recyclable in waste stream #4.

An ongoing responsibility

These measures do not remove the environmental impact of producing and selling coffee.

Our aim is therefore not to describe ourselves as 'sustainable', but to continue making informed decisions about where we can reduce our impact and use our resources to support the long-term resilience of coffee.
