A long-term approach to sourcing
Many roasters begin by identifying a price point, flavour profile or gap in their menu, then search for a coffee to meet that need. We take a different approach, choosing instead to prioritise relationships.
In each origin in which we source, we work with a single supply chain and return to it every harvest.
Buying small volumes at high prices does little to support a producer if the majority of their harvest cannot also be sold profitably, which is why rather than cherry-picking only the highest-scoring microlots, we prioritise buying meaningful volumes of producers’ main-harvest coffees.
As Blossom grows, we aim to deepen our existing relationships rather than continually adding new suppliers. This gives producers greater security, confidence in future demand and, we hope, the financial capacity to invest in their own businesses. In return, we gain deeper access to their coffees and greater consistency from season to season, allowing us to share better, more meaningful coffees with our customers.
Why we publish prices
Long-term purchasing tells only part of the story. Without pricing transparency, it is difficult to understand how value is distributed across a supply chain or hold buyers accountable for the claims they make.
Coffee roasters have a responsibility to work in a way that contributes to greater financial stability for the producers with whom they work. We see transparency as central to this. By publishing our data and openly communicating how much is paid for our coffee, we hope to contribute to a movement that normalises prioritising sustainable incomes for producers and increases awareness among consumers.
Annual transparency reports
Our annual reports provide a complete record of the coffees we purchased, the supply chains we returned to, the volumes we bought and the prices paid at key stages of the value chain.
They are designed to make our sourcing decisions comparable from one year to the next.
Reporting standards
In 2022, we became the second UK coffee roaster to sign The Pledge, a shared standard for transparency reporting developed by coffee professionals in 2018.
Signatories agree to publish a consistent set of information about their green coffee purchases, including the producer, lot size, quality and price. This adds context that makes reports more consistent and comparable. To sign The Pledge, a minimum of one coffee that we have bought must be considered transparent according to the agreed criteria. However, we are proud to have published data for 100% of coffees bought since 2021.
