A sustainable approach to business

Working in an environmentally sustainable way is a responsibility, not a choice. While greenwashing and empty buzzwords become more and more common, we hope by taking a transparent and simple approach to communicating our sustainability efforts, that we can provide our customers with the tools to hold not only us, but all businesses, accountable.

For as long as we are in business, we will always place sustainability at the centre of what we do and support others to do the same.

Below are details of the accreditations and projects that we have undertaken which demonstrate our commitment to a sustainable future. For a more detailed breakdown, read our latest annual Impact Report:

Transparency Report 2023

Climate Neutral Company

Our ambition is to have as little impact on the environment as possible. From our electric delivery van to the 100% renewable energy used at the roastery, we are always looking to invest in new technologies and to implement steps to reduce our emissions.

However, we accept that thorough reduction plans take time. During this time, we are committed to taxing ourselves for the environmental cost of doing business by investing in carbon credits and helping to fund projects that deliver immediate emissions reductions.

1% For The Planet

“The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organisations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems.”

Yvon Chouinard in his book, ‘Let My People Go Surfing’

We are proud members of 1% for the planet, donating 1% of our sales to environmental nonprofits.

That means every time someone buys our coffee, we invest 1% of their purchase in organisations working hard to make the world a more resilient and sustainable place.

World Coffee Research

We are huge admirers and committed partners of World Coffee Research, a non-profit which unites the global coffee industry to drive science-based agricultural solutions to urgently secure a diverse and sustainable supply of quality coffee today and for generations to come.

We have supported WCR since our very first day of trading but 2021 saw us step up our efforts by moving away from the ‘checkoff programme’, in which we donated per coffee we purchased, to a fixed rate $500 annual membership. This means less time spent on admin for WCR and more money going directly to research programmes.

Blossom Espresso x City of Trees

With an ever-increasing number of us choosing to live in urban areas, our dependency on trees and green spaces within our cities for physical and mental wellbeing has never been greater.

Urban trees and woodlands also help to lock up carbon, filter air pollution, reduce flood risk and provide essential habitats for wildlife. They are nature’s ace card.

We have partnered up with Manchester City of Trees, a local charity who aim to re-invigorate the city’s landscape by transforming underused, unloved woodland and planting a tree for every man, woman and child who lives there, within the next 30 years.

For every retail bag of our Blossom Espresso we sell we donate a percentage of the profits to City of Trees (£1 per kilo). That means, with your help, every 40 bags of coffee we sell will fund the planting of a new tree here in the city.

You can find more information about City of Trees and how to get involved here.

Our Packaging

Our coffee bags are made from up to 83% post-consumer recycled material. They are recyclable in waste stream #4—simply scan the QR code on the bottom of the bag and enter your post code to find your nearest LDPE recycling point.

The labels are printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) certified paper using vegetable-based inks that are much kinder to the planet. Our mailing boxes are all made with a minimum of 75% recycled materials and are 100% recyclable to the end user (or reuse them at home). We use kraft paper parcel tape that is made from sustainably produced paper and is 100% recyclable.
