The speciality coffee industry is not alone in facing a precarious road ahead. Now more than ever, we all have an essential role to play in protecting the things we love. For us, this means inspiring more people to fall in love with speciality coffee and encouraging them to be part of a movement that helps to protect it for future generations.
From day one we have acknowledged the importance of accurate data guiding our decision making. By implementing additional steps throughout our operations, we are able to monitor our impact closely and be constantly reviewing ways in which we can improve our overall performance.
We admit that we aren’t perfect. We don’t have any quick fixes or easy answers, but by continually evaluating our process and striving to lessen our impact, we can make you a promise: We will always place sustainability at the centre of what we do and support others to do the same.
Below are details of the accreditations and projects we have undertaken behind the scenes at Blossom that demonstrate our commitment to a sustainable future.

Our ambition is to have as little impact on the environment as we possibly can. From our electric delivery van to the 100% renewable energy used at the roastery, we are always striving to implement ways of working that can help us make informed decisions about the impact we are having on the planet. A more detailed breakdown of these initiatives can be found in our most recent Environmental Impact Report.
Unfortunately, the nature of our supply chain means that currently we are responsible for certain unavoidable emissions across our operations as well. Whilst continuing to research alternative processes for the future, we neutralise our remaining footprint by working with the leading experts on carbon neutrality and climate finance, Natural Capital Partners, becoming a certified a CarbonNeutral® company to the standards of the Carbon Neutral Protocol.
By purchasing carbon credits (offsets), our money helps fund projects that deliver immediate emission reductions through sustainable development projects.
1% For The Planet

We are proud members of 1% for the planet, donating 1% of our sales to environmental nonprofits.
That means every time someone buys our coffee, we invest 1% of their purchase in organisations working hard to make the world a more resilient and sustainable place.
The Pledge: Transparent Sourcing
We feel a responsibility to work in a way which ensures financial stability for the producers with whom we work, as it is only by increasing sustainability throughout the value chain that we believe speciality coffee production can be secured. We see transparency as absolutely central to this.
By publishing our data and openly communicating how much is being paid for our coffees, we hope to be part of a movement which normalises prioritising living incomes for producers and increases awareness for consumers, while in doing so distinguishing ourselves from those that use ‘transparency’ only as a marketing tool.
In signing The Pledge, we are part of a group of like-minded roasters and coffee buyers globally that are agreeing to share a fixed set of variables when reporting on green coffee purchases. Together, we aim to create a common standard for transparency reporting that is applicable throughout our whole industry.
Blossom Espresso x City of Trees
With an ever-increasing number of us choosing to live in urban areas, our dependency on trees and green spaces within our cities for physical and mental wellbeing has never been greater.
Urban trees and woodlands also help to lock up carbon, filter air pollution, reduce flood risk and provide essential habitats for wildlife. They are nature’s ace card.
We have partnered up with Manchester City of Trees, a local charity who aim to re-invigorate the city’s landscape by transforming underused, unloved woodland and planting a tree for every man, woman and child who lives there, within the next 30 years.
For every retail bag of our Blossom Espresso we sell we donate a percentage of the profits to City of Trees (£1 per kilo). That means, with your help, every 40 bags of coffee we sell will fund the planting of a new tree here in the city.
World Coffee Research
World Coffee Research are an organisation that is on a mission to safeguard the future of coffee through collaborative scientific research with the potential to dramatically improve coffee productivity, coffee quality, climate resilience, and farmer livelihoods.
We have supported WCR since our very first day of trading but 2021 saw us step up our efforts by moving away from the ‘checkoff programme’, in which we donated per coffee we purchased, to a fixed rate $500 annual membership. This means less time spent on admin for WCR and more money going directly to research programmes.
All of our coffee bags are certified carbon neutral by the supplier and are made from 100% recyclable plastic with an aluminium-free barrier. This last part means that once you’re finished with the coffee, it can simply be put in any standard domestic plastic recycling.
The labels are printed locally on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) certified paper using vegetable-based inks that are much kinder to the planet.
Our mailing boxes are all made with a minimum of 75% recycled materials and are 100% recyclable to the end user (or reuse them at home). We use kraft paper parcel tape that is made from sustainably produced paper and is 100% recyclable and our packing tissue paper is made from sustainable forest sources and is 100% recyclable and compostable.
Environmental Impact Report
We are incredibly proud of the work we undertake behind the scenes to reduce our impact on the environment.
Our yearly Environmental Impact Report has been designed to be a transparent breakdown of the methods we use to monitor and measure our emissions across the entire business. It will remain central to everything we do.
Through publishing this report, we hope to interact with our community to discover and embrace new and innovative ways of working that will help us continue to raise the industry benchmark and inspire others to do the same.
